The PURPOSE program seeks to train a diverse cohort of fellows in research with a focus on social justice in education. The goal of the program is to provide fellows with opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills they need to enter and successfully complete graduate programs in education and related fields and ultimately to increase the diversity of the education sciences. PURPOSE fellows will spend one year developing research skills through varied experiences including one-on-one faculty mentor relationships, coursework, bi-weekly proseminars, and a service learning research practicum at the . Fellows earn a total annual stipend of $11,000 and can use up to $2,000 in funds for research materials, travel, and other fees to support their research.

PURPOSE is a five-year Pathways to the Education Sciences research training grant (Grant IDs: R305B170017, R305B210014) jointly awarded to Florida State University and Florida A&M University in the amount of $1,020,800. The grant was renewed for a second 5-year funding cycle beginning in 2021 in the amount of $1,498,620. The grant is funded entirely by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES)/ National Center for Education Research (NCER).
