The PURPOSE program application form should take under 30 minutes to complete, discounting the time it may take to prepare the other application components (e.g., writing a research goal statement, requesting an academic letter of reference). We recommend you review and prepare all application components (listed below) prior to beginning the application form. Eligibility requirements
- Continuous enrollment through Fall 2024 at FSU or FAMU as either an upperclassman or beginning master’s student in education or a related field (including but not limited to Psychology, English, Food Science, or Communication Science & Disorders)
- Note: PURPOSE is a yearlong fellowship that requires you to participate throughout the spring, summer, and fall semesters of 2024. Post-baccalaureate students are only eligible to participate in the event that they are between undergraduate and graduate programs at FAMU or FSU during the summer of 2024, but preferred consideration will be given to continuously enrolled students. Graduate students who plan to graduate before the fall 2024 semester are not eligible to participate.
- In person availability during the day in Tallahassee so you can work with your mentor and attend bi-weekly proseminars throughout the year, as well as participate at the 6-week Freedom Schools summer camp
- 3.0 GPA (undergraduate)/3.3 GPA (graduate)
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (documentation required of permanent residents)
- Research goal statement
- Letter of recommendation
Additional application components
In addition to completing the following survey form, you submit several documents. Note: The application cannot be submitted without uploading the required documents.
- A statement describing your goals, interests, experience, and fit with PURPOSE (Required document upload within the survey; there is also a question in the application requiring you to rank your top three mentor preferences). Please be sure to address each of the following in your 2-3 page statement:
- Your academic/career goals, including interest in pursuing a doctorate in an education related field
- How PURPOSE could help you achieve your goals
- Potential areas of research interest
- Your interest in working with one or more faculty mentors (see PURPOSE website)
- Any experiences working in research and/or education
- Invite a faculty member or other to speak to your potential for graduate study and conducting research in education to send a letter of recommendation to PURPOSE (Referee contact information required by the application includes their name, title, institution, and email address; the referee will send their letter of reference to the PURPOSE Training Director, Jeannine Turner: jeturner@fsu.edu)
- Unofficial undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) academic transcript(s) (Required document upload within the survey)
- GRE scores (Not required, but please report scores if taken)
